DIY Cheap Fall Decorations

First of all, we live in a log home so most of my decorations are already done as it comes with the territory of being country at heart. But I do love finding deals on all things fall. Harvest time is my absolute favorite time of year especially since my accident. Seeing the colors so vibrant I just cannot get over them. I love listening to the fields blow in the wind as they are drying out ready to be combined, the sound of the tractors going steady, the feeling of nesting coming on as we get ready with the slight weather change knowing winter is just around the corner. I try to make the home inviting and cozy as the fall comes in. I start decorating in the last week of august as this is when harvest starts to get in full swing. A lot of the decorations I have come from the dollar store, winners and michaelas. These are my go to places for anything fall. In past years when I could make it down to Montana, Hobby Lobby was also a huge piece of happiness here on earth to me seeing all the colors and décor that had to do with fall. I always look for those deals of the season, so each year as it nears the end of the season that is when I buy most of my haul. It can be anywhere from 50-75% off and that is when I build my fall décor up. If you are just starting this season or you want to add more but don’t have the funds for that full priced item here are a few helpful tips to get you through the season without spending and arm and a leg.

  1. Make your own décor from fabric- my grandmother is a sewing machine, her sewing room makes most women jealous at the look of it, she is very good at what she does and is one of the most giving people I have ever known. Most of what she makes she gives away and makes with love. She has taught me how to quilt and also how to make cute crafts such as pumpkins made out of scrap material. These are adorable and look fantastic in groups of 3 on a coffee table or shelf. Friendly tip, if you are grouping anything together for décor, do it in an odd number this makes things look more natural. So 3 pumpkins compared to 4 look more enticing that the perfect 4.

  2. Wood signs- For years now I have been making wood hello fall signs. They are a great touch to the porch and take up most of the décor space so you don’t have to add much. These are just a pop of holiday cheer to any door setting and people going by can enjoy the look of it as well as those coming to visit.

  3. Dollar store leaves- I go to the dollar store for most of my fall décor, there are always great deals that can’t be beat from door hangers to fake fall leaves. I hang these leaves all through the house to add that pop of yellow red and orange to the settings. Along with our antiques we have around it all goes together nicely.

  4. Second hand stores- we have multiple stores that are second hand and during holiday times there are usually great finds for the occasion. I love looking for amber glass of any kind that will tie into the harvest look.

  5. Old pickle jars- I take a lot of rustic old pickle and canning jars and add some natural pinecones I find out in nature along with twinkle lights and some ribbon and make a fun light to a shelf or counter when hosting.

  6. Lace- I use lace a lot in my fall décor from old lace curtains to dollar bin fabric from the fabric store I like the faded white lace that will cover the sideboard and tables that hold the appetizers and décor.

  7. Nature- I use a lot of twigs, pinecones, and stalks of wheat, barley and fresh alfalfa in my décor. Any type of dried grass that now is golden is a great touch to any table scape and it is free for the taking in the ditches. Stones and wood pieces can also be used as bases with a flower or leaf on top for a pop of color.

There are many ways to get fall décor for cheap you just have to look around for the deals and in nature. Pay attention to the colors of the season and see what all you can find for your fall/harvest décor.
