Buttermilk Donuts
This is a family recipe from my great great grandmother. She was a busy farm wife and had these made by 5 am ready for the men to eat with breakfast before the farm day started. Its an easy recipe to make in a hurry and will be enjoyed by all.
1 Cup of sugar
2 eggs
Mix well
2 Tbs. butter or margarine room temp
1 tsp vanilla
ADD
1 cup buttermilk (tip if you don’t have butter milk and don’t wish to buy a whole carton for the recipe take one cup of milk and add 1 tsp vinegar, let sit 5 min before adding to recipe)
Mix together and add 3 cups of flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp cinnamon
Chill in fridge, can leave over night
Roll out on flour and cut with donut cutter
Fry in electric frying pan @350, turn when brown on one side, use canola or crisco oil to cook in. (helpful tip be super careful of oil as it is so hot and will burn easy keep all little ones away from this part of the cooking process.
Lift out with metal tongs and roll immediately in sugar mixture of white sugar and cinnamon if you like then lay on brown paper bag to completely absorb up extra oil. Serve warm for a coffee time, can put in container and keep up to 2 days. Best fresh.
